General Description:-
This is a site we first visited in December 2011 when we arrived on the Algarve looking for somewhere to spend Christmas and the new year. We thought it was an OK site, bit “clicky” with some campers returning to the same pitch year on year. This of course meant that all the decent pitches were gone leaving some that were very poor. Fortunately, or so we thought at the time, while we were looking around pals Chris and Steve phoned and suggested we return a bit north and stay on at site they had discovered.

We went to where Chris and Steve suggested and stayed away from Turiscampo until this year when friends Ann and John said they were staying there we tried to book elsewhere but were unable to.

It was fortuitous, the site has been upgraded out of all recognition since our inspection in 2011 the pitches were large and flat with a good mix of sun and shade. There is a reasonably priced and well stocked shop on site.

A large outdoor and a large recently installed indoor pool together with Jacuzzi pools is available,

Toilets and Showers:-
These must rate as among the best facilities we have found anywhere in Europe (including the C&CC and C&MC in UK) they are modern, having been built new within the last couple cleaned a number of times throughout the day. Loo paper soap and hand dryers are all provided.

Laundrette:-
There is a laundrette that was serviceable but for the sizeof site a little on the small side

Restaurant:-
The bar and restaurant on site has recently been refurbished and although we did not use it enjoys a good reputation. We did not quite get round to trying it.

Conclusions:-
This is very popular site on the western end of the Algarve close to Praia da Luz and Lagos. Many customers from all over Europe book year after year often returning to the same pitch.

Price:-
We stayed 14 nights and paid €19.00 per night

General Description:-
Camping Castro Verde is a municipal run site on the edge of town. The receptionist spoke good English and strangely required us to sign a “consent form” in Portuguese that she said was required under the latest European data protection laws before they could open and look at our passports. She also said they could no longer copy the passports for their records. Since the latest update (that I think was May 2018) we have stayed on sites in Holland, Spain and Portugal but on every other the passports have been examined and copied.

There are two camping areas the first as you enter, is a large hardstanding where virtually all the campers are ensconced, some for the entire winter. Why anyone would want to spend the entire winter less than 2 metres from the either side neighbours in, effectively, a car park is totally beyond us.

There are further into the site a number of grassed pitch areas. While we were there not a single one was in use, probably because of the difficulty in getting over the high curbs. Like us the other five units in this area had set up on the access roads.

Toilets and Showers:-
The facilities were a little tired but kept clean and supplied all the necessities (including those rare Portuguese campsite items - loo seats)

Laundrette:-
There is a laundry with a huge industrial machine at just €2.50 per wash.

Restaurant:-
There is no restaurant on site but plenty of bars and restaurants within walking distance.

Conclusions:-
This like many municipal sites Camping Castro Verde is somewhat scruffy but is fine for a short(ish) stay.

Price:-
We stayed six nights and paid €13.50 per night

General Description:-
Cutting through the back doubles this site is just 10km from Calais car ferry terminal and so is very popular with those using the ferries from and to the UK. It has a large permenant section but these are all well kept and do not, unlike some we have been in, resemble a caravan graveyard. The whole site is bright and well kept although at this time of year pool etc were all closed. there are though bars and restaurants aplenty within walking distance, along with a baker.

The pitches are large and flat and WiFi for one device is free

Toilets and Showers:-
Toilets and showers were modern, bright clean and provided with all the necessities. If I had to complain it was that the auto on/off lights went of a little quick

Laundrette:-
There was a laundrette but we did not use it.

Restaurant:-
Can’t recall seeing one

Conclusions:-
This is a very pleasant site just minutes from both the tunnel and ferry terminals so makes a first class overnight stay but is comfortable enough for a longer stay.

Price:-
We stayed just two nights and paid the ACSI price of €17.00 per night which was inflated by a €0.50 pp tourist tax to €18.00 per night total.

General Description:-
This is a well run popular site with, when we arrived, virtually all pitches occupied by “snow birds”.

Everything on the site is kept in tip top condition and despite all but us and one other being Dutch or German we were presented on arrival with a thick regional booklet printed in English.

Toilets and Showers:-
There are several facilities blocks on the site and all modern and kept in spotless condition. The block nearest us has all the requirements but the next along has no hand dryer in the gents toilets. The toilets although as good as any are are sadly inadequate at times of high need.

Laundrette:-
There is a laundry, rather expensive at €6.50 for what is a small machine.

Restaurant:-
The restaurant looked quite good but we didn’t use it

Conclusions:-
It would seem from the above that this is an ideal site that should come highly recommended. It should but it doesn’t. The site is in the form of a big rectangle with 11 rows of caravans/motorhomes and one of static caravans with about as much ambiance as a carpark. It is not helped by the fact that Maastricht Airport is less than 5km (3 ml) to the north and the site is directly under the take off flight path, still Stansted it is not and only a few planes per day seem to take off, sadly there is one at 21:45 and, at weekends another at 21.50 and yet a third.

Price:-
We stayed here for 14 nights getting (as part of the ACSI deal) two free thus reducing the price per night from the standard ACSI rate of €17.00 per night to €14.57 plus tourist tax of a whopping €2.40 per person per night.
